Yebiga is Rakija or Rakia, a Serbian Plum Brandy. Rakija dates back to the early years of the Ottoman Empire, and today, remains the pride of about 60 million people covering the area of ex-Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and parts of Romania and Hungary. The brand was started by Bill Gould, a founding member and bassist for the Bay Area-based rock group Faith No More. He discovered and fell in love with Rekija when the band was touring the Balkans in the early-90's. When he realized he couldn't find any of it in the States, he decided to partner with a family owned distillery in Central Serbia to create his own brand.
Bela is an unaged Rekija made from a 50-50 blend of hyperlocal, handpicked Čačanska rodna and Čačanska lepotica plums, both native to the region of central/southern Serbia. The plums are pitted and mashed to prepare for fermentation. It is fermented with ambient yeasts and double distilled in 500 liter batches in copper alembics. It is kosher and has no added sugar, colors, or flavors. It is clean, fragrant and dry with lots of stone fruit and absurdly drinkable. Enjoy it neat either at room temp or out of the freezer. Awarded Best Brandy at Tales of the Cocktail in 2024.
