Fernet is the most bitter category of Amaro. Fernet Branca dates back to 1845 and is made from  and infusion 27 herbs, barks and roots. It is aggressively bitter with only a tiny amount of sweetness to balance and was originally developed (like many Amaro) as a health tonic. San Francisco is one of the largest markets for it where it became a very popular drink for bartenders and other service industry pros.
