Mezcalosfera Madrecuixe
50% ABV
Madrecuixe is an Agave Karwinskii, a family of agaves that sort of look like dwarf palms in that they have a short stalk that the piña and spines of the agave grow atop. This one is made by Maestro Felipe de Jesus Cortes, a young Mezcalero whose father Margarito and brother Job are also producers. Felipe also operates the bottling facility for Mezcaloteca/Mezcalosfera. Their palenque is in Miahuatlan, Oaxaca. The agaves are roasted in an earthen pit with mesquite and oak and then crushed with a stone tahona. They are fermented with well water and ambient yeasts in sabino wood tanks and double distilled in a copper refrescadera. It is proofed with heads and "shishe" or the first distillation of the Madrecuixe. Made in March of 2025 in a batch of just 195 liters.
About Mezcalosfera:
Mezcalosfera is the export brand of the world renowned tasting room Mezcaloteca in Oaxaca City, Mexico. To call it a tasting room sort of undersells it. It's a Library/Temple/Education Center for Mezcal. Founded in 2010 by Silvia Muñoz and Marco Ochoa, they source batches of mezcal directly from producers throughout Mexico. Their distinctive label lists all of the details of production and provenance, a style of transparency that has thankfully been copied by numerous other brands in the Mezcal world since. They work with only traditional producers who they compensate fairly and purchase from in a sustainable manner. They are a beacon of quality and integrity in the space.
