This is a 'Classic Penedés', a quality designation of sparkling wines from the region of Penedes in Northeast Spain. This region was best known for Cava production, but when that denomination of origin was expanded to additional regions of Spain, many of the best producers felt that the quality of the DO had been diluted. Classic Penedes requires organic farming of the grapes which must come exclusively from the region, and must be aged a minimum of 15 months. The Cava DO does not require organic farming and allows for shorter aging time.
This is a vintage blend of Xarel-lo, Macabeu, & Parellada grapes that were vinified and aged on the lees for 15 months. Produced in the traditional method (méthode champenoise), where secondary fermentation occurs in the bottle. It has some bright citric notes, a whisper of lactic funk, and a fine mousse. Organically farmed, vintage bubbles from a 100 year old family owned brand for under $20? YES!
