Yamazaki is the pioneer of Single Malt Japanese Whisky, made at the namesake distillery, the first and oldest of its kind in Japan. Like many distilleries, its location was selected for the quality of the local water. Set just outside of Kyoto in a region formerly known as "Minaseno", it is reknowned for it's soft water making it an ideal location for producing whisky. It is a blend of malt whiskies aged in multiple barrel types, including Japanese Mizunara oak, for a minimum of 18 years. The nose has the distinct spice profile that Mizunara oak imparts with raisiny fruit. On the palate, lush chocolate and tart berry fruit are complemented by a spicy and plush finish. Stunning whisky.
