55% ABV
This mezcal was made by Maestro Gregorio Hernàndez at his palenque, La Soledad, in the village of Santiago Matatlan Oaxaca. This is the first expression from Dixeebe we've tried that wasn't produced by the Cortes family at their own palenque in Matatlan, but rather from a neighbor of theirs. San Martinero is an agave in the Karwinskii family that is very large for a Karwinskii and is similar to Cirial. It has a lovely mouthfeel and is not nearly as hot as its high ABV would lead you to believe. It has the characteristic vegetal and earthy notes of a Karwinskii that are framed by ample agave sweetness.
About Mezcal Dixeebe
Dixeebe (deej-bay) is a word from the indigenous Zapotec language of the central valleys of Oaxaca that is an expression of gratitude and connectedness to the moment. It is a toast and an expression of thanks. It is also the name of a Mezcal brand founded by Don Valentin Cortes, a 5th generation Maestro Mezcalero and his son Asìs. Their palenque is in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca, the "Mezcal Capital of the World". Their family founded Mezcal El Jolgorio and Nuestra Soledad which they are no longer affiliated with. Don Valentin had essentially retired from distilling until Asìs and some friends convinced him to begin production on a limited scale in 2022 and Mezcal Dixeebe was born. We are so grateful that Don Valentin has decided to share his amazing talents in mezcal production with us again!
