Navy Rum refers to a high proof blended Rum that was distributed to British Navy sailors as a daily ration up to the 17th century until the 1970's. It was bottled at "Navy Strength" which meant of an alcoholic where the spirit would still ignite were it to be spilled on gunpowder on the cannon deck by a drunken sailor. This particular bottle was conceived of by Planteray Master Blender Alexandre Gabriel and rum historian Matt Pietrek as an homage to the way that British Navy Rum was traditionally made. The blend is the following: Barbados - West Indies Rum Distillery (43% of blend) / Trinidad – Trinidad Distillers Ltd. (36% of blend) / Guyana (17% of blend) / Jamaica – Long Pond and Clarendon Distilleries (4% of blend).
All of the rums are aged in ex-Bourbon barrels in their countries of origin prior to being shipped to the Planteray facility in Cognac, France where they are blended. They undergo additional aging in heavily used ex-Cognac casks and in open top wooden vats in a humid environment next the river. This is similar to how British Navy Rum was aged in London.
This Rum is exceptional. Aromas of vanilla, molasses, dried fruit and spices. On the palate it's bright and lively with tart cherry, vanilla and barrel char. A complex sipper or a dynamic mixer in all manner of tropical cocktails.
Producer Notes:
Aged in ex-bourbon barrels in their countries of origin, these rums were then transported to the south-west of France, emulating the historic tradition of dynamic aging on ships. Upon arrival in the Cognac region, the blend undergoes double aging in used oak barrels and extensive oxygenation in large, open wooden vats in cellars next to the river L'Antenne, replicating the humid environment of the Naval docks in London, enhancing maturation.
