Vegetal de la Grande-Chartreuse

69% ABV

Vegetal de la Grande-Chartreuse is the predecessor to and essence of the legendary Green Chartreuse. It's been produced by Carthusian monks from the Grande Chartreuse Monastery north of Grenobles, France since 1605. Their holy order dates back to the 11th century and some version of this product was developed as a medicinal tonic. It has only been available in the States for a few years and used to be a much smuggled bottle by bartenders visiting France. Ironically with the reduced production of Chartreuse, it's now the only product from the Monastery that is readily and easily available.

We think of it like Green Chartreuse Bitters. It's quite a bit higher in alcoholic strength, flavor intensity, and aromatic power, but lower in sugar and lighter in viscosity. The flavor is singular and nearly indescribable. Mint, anise, pine, herbal overload. This is not a like-for-like replacement for regular Green Chartreuse except for the most adventurous of drinkers. Add a bar spoon to a Manhattan or a Martini for a blast of herbal intensity. At the bottom of the old school wooden box that the bottle comes in, there is a dasher insert for the bottle that allows for more control in serving it. Add several dashes to a glass of seltzer or tonic water.
