This deciduous coral tree flowers late in the dry season blooming thousands of scarlet red flowers that are incorporated in regional traditional dishes. These flowers are not only a delicacy for humans - they also serve as source of nectar for hummingbirds and some bat species. Found in thirteen states across Mexico, the Árbol de Pipe has multiple colloquial names: Colorín, El Pito, & Zompantle are some of its other aliases. Árboles de Pipe are found throughout the Cañada region in Oaxaca, especially on the route connecting Santa Maria Tlalixtac to San Juan Bautista Cuicatlán.
